AAERE 2025 CALL FOR PAPERS
The 14th Congress of the Asian Association of Environmental and Resource Economics (AAERE) will be held at Renmin University of China (RUC), Beijing, China, from August 25 to 27, 2025. The 14th Congress will be a hybrid (in-person and online) conference: The audience can utilize both in-person and online channels, while a presenter will present in person at the venue. However, an online presentation may be available for participants who cannot attend the venue for specific reasons, such as travel restrictions or health issues.
The 14th Congress of the AAERE succeeds the very successful previous Congresses held in Fukuoka (2016), Singapore (2017), Beijing (2019), Seoul (2021), Ho Chi Minh (2022), Tokyo (2023), and Hsinchu (2024). In 2018, the AAERE jointly organized the 6th World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists (WCERE), in cooperation with the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE) and the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE), held in Gothenburg, Sweden. This year, the AAERE will organize a WCERE Special Session titled "Critical Minerals and the Just Clean Energy Transition" at the upcoming EAERE Annual Conference, which will be held in Norway from June 16 to 19.
You are invited to submit theoretical and empirical papers in all areas of environmental and resource economics for presentation in this 14th Congress.
Pre-registration is required to attend the conference. Please fill the form below before June 2nd (Beijing Time, GMT+8)!
- June 15, 2025: Deadline for submitting an abstract.

IMPORTANT DATES
Note:
-
Presenters of all sessions and organizers of the thematic session should be 2025 fiscal year active members of AAERE and should pay both the membership fee and the registration fee.
THE MAIN THEME
The main theme of the 14th Congress is “Advancing Economic and Ecological Resilience under Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for Asia”. This theme builds upon the foundation laid by the 13th Congress last year. The rapid pace of economic growth and urbanization across Asia has led to significant environmental and economic vulnerabilities, such as the over-exploitation of natural resources, ecosystem degradation, and the disruption of livelihoods due to climate-induced disasters. These challenges seriously threaten the region’s long-term sustainability, hindering many Asian countries in achieving both economic stability and ecological resilience. As climate change accelerates, fostering economic sustainability and ecological resilience has become essential to ensuring Asia’s prosperous future, presenting challenges and transformative opportunities for nations striving to balance development and environmental stewardship.
Addressing these challenges necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the interconnections among economic development, resource depletion, environmental degradation, and climate change. Additionally, due to their cross-border nature, these challenges cannot be addressed separately by individual countries. It is essential to adopt a regional perspective, promoting collaboration across national boundaries to develop effective solutions. Through regional collaboration, Asian nations can build resilient economic systems and ecological frameworks that foster sustainable development and strengthen climate resilience across the entire region.
To advance economic and ecological resilience under climate change in Asia, a broad range of policy measures and coordinated efforts across the region will be essential. These should include mechanisms such as carbon pricing, reforms to resource taxation, the scaling up of transition finance, and investment in developing low-carbon, resource-efficient infrastructure. In addition, enhancing water resource efficiency and recycling, alongside land-use strategies that protect biodiversity while supporting agricultural productivity, will be crucial to fostering long-term sustainability. However, considering Asia's extensive diversity, with countries at various economic stages and distinct cultural contexts, the effective execution of these policies necessitates a cohesive approach. This can be achieved through collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and citizens at the congress, where knowledge-sharing and constructive dialogue will help generate context-specific policy solutions suited to the diverse needs of the region’s nations.
The AAERE is honored to host the 14th Congress as a vital platform for sharing both theoretical and empirical insights, bringing together researchers not only from across Asia but also from around the world. This collaboration is expected to accelerate the green transition and enhance resource use efficiency, driving the region toward an ecologically resilient and sustainable future. The Congress will encompass scientific contributions, in-depth policy discussions, and presentations. It invites papers on various environmental and resource economics topics, fostering dialogue about challenges and opportunities in advancing economic and ecological resilience in Asia.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS
The 14th Congress of the AAERE will feature parallel sessions, organized thematic sessions, and poster sessions, conducted in a hybrid format. Presenters are encouraged to attend in person, though online presentations may be allowed for those unable to attend for specific reasons.
Regular Parallel Session
To submit papers to the Regular Parallel Session, authors must provide an abstract (one-page Word or PDF) via the conference website. The abstract should include the paper's title, author(s) and affiliation(s), introduction, objectives, main findings, and conclusion (more than 350 words). The Scientific Committee will select abstracts based on scientific quality and originality. While multiple submissions are allowed, each participant may present only one paper.
We recommend authors with original ideas and concrete research plans who cannot submit full papers by the deadline submit their abstracts to the Poster Sessions. Authors may switch from the Regular Parallel Sessions to the Poster Sessions, provided the change occurs before the full paper submission deadline.
Thematic Sessions
To propose a Thematic Session, submit three or four papers linked by a unifying theme in environmental and resource economics. The Scientific Committee will select a limited number of sessions based on scientific quality and relevance. Thematic sessions will run in parallel with Regular Parallel Sessions.
- Each organizer may apply for only one thematic session and must be an active AAERE member. If you are not a member or need to renew, please complete the membership process at the AAERE website. Organizers must submit a 2-page proposal (following the thematic format) outlining the title, organizer, chairperson, presenters, discussants, and session details. Organizers should ensure presenters and discussants are informed of any program committee updates.
- Individual presentation abstracts (following the abstract format) must be registered separately by presenters for thematic sessions. Presenters should include the thematic session title at the top of the abstract. Presenters at the thematic session could present only once at the regular parallel session.
- Organizers and presenters of thematic sessions must be AAERE members. Discussants must be registered for the conference, but AAERE membership is not required.
Poster Sessions
To submit a paper for the Poster Sessions, authors must provide a one-page abstract including the title, author(s) and affiliation(s), introduction, objectives, main findings, and conclusion (more than 350 words). Poster formatting details will be provided later.
Poster Sessions feature short oral presentations (10 minutes for presentation + 5 minutes for questions), without discussants. Full papers are not required for Poster Sessions. These sessions are in-person only and run parallel to the Regular Parallel Sessions.
The Scientific Committee will award a prize for the best Poster, recognized as a frontier in Environmental and Resource Economics. Only young academics (under 40) are eligible. Presenters wishing to be considered for the prize must include their birthdate in the abstract. Single-author presentations may be preferred over those with multiple authors. The presenter must be an AAERE member.
Ready to Submit
Selection Standards for Applications
Although AAERE requires only the submission of the abstract when applying, the objectives, main findings, and conclusion must still be clearly described at this stage. We may reject a presentation if the abstract comes under any of the following conditions.
- Abstracts that describe only the research outline
- Abstracts that do not keep the designated number of letters (more than 350 words, 11 font, Times New Roman, Word or PDF file)
- Abstracts with insufficient relevance to the topics discussed by AAERE
- Abstracts intended for personal benefit or that seek to promote political parties, or religions
